Today, we see people wearing crosses. It is as normal to our sight as any other kind of jewelry. We see Christians wearing them as well as non-Christians. We see both men and women, young and old a like wearing them, regardless of their creed or race. And if you ask someone as to why he or she thinks people wear them, she probably just shrug her shoulders and either say, "May be they just like them", or just brush away the matter with a simple, "Who cares?" Yes, people have been wearing crosses for centuries. But are there differences in the reasons behind why people in the old times wear them compared with those of today?
During the past centuries anyone wearing a cross around his or her neck will mostly be identified as being a Christian. And why do the Christians wear them? There were probably many reasons for it with one of the most prominent one being, to profess their faith in the Christian religion, i.e., to let others know their Christian identity. Of course there were some Christians who objected to the wearing of the crosses saying that it is a form of idolatry but it was gradually accepted by more and more people and the number of those wearing them consequently increased. Some started wearing them as charms. To many, the cross they wear protects them from all forms of evil and danger.
Today, wearing crosses has indeed crossed into modern fashion. It has become a trendy thing that both Christians and non-Christians are keen on wearing them. To the Christians, it may be to profess their faith, and even to some non-Christians, the symbolism that lies behind the cross may count as many do know that it contains the message of universal love. But of course, there are those who just wear them as a fashionable thing, to keep up with the latest trend or just because they saw some rock stars they love wearing them.
Whatever reason people are wearing them for, we do now see a lot of people with crosses dangling from their necks. And you can see many different designs now available in the market that it seems, the cross has once again, in one way or another, won the hearts of the people.
